Chapter Six

“Help them, dammit, Finn! Don’t just freaking stand there! He was your present to me. Now save him!” I don’t know why I thought Finn should be the one to break the barrier, but it had to be someone, and I didn’t know how to do it.

But Grayden was already moving, and Althea with him.

“Can we do this?” she asked her former lover as they joined hands.

“I don’t know if we’ll survive, but if there’s anyone I want to go out with, it would be you.” Grayden gripped her hand harder as I held back tears.

There was chanting, and they raised their hands together, then brought them down with a crash that sounded like a high-speed train hitting a fifty-foot-deep wall of concrete. The very trees shook, the wind stopped, and all the Victorian lamps throughout the whole village flickered to nothing and then blazed like the sun had come out again.

Nothing happened to that fricking barrier, though. And now Fig was running behind Jabbers, his tongue hanging out and exhaustion evident in his every move.

That was it. I was going in. I had no idea what I would do, did not care that what I did hadn’t worked before, and I didn’t care if this made me too stupid to live. There was something there, and I would grab hold of it and make it my bitch in two point three seconds. See if I didn’t.

“This will stop,” I yelled as I launched myself at the ball the two dogs were stuck in.

And then I was in it between one second and the next. Somehow, I found myself sitting calmly in the middle of the bubble with my legs in the criss-cross-applesauce pose I’d learned in the one year of dance I’d taken, back before I’d been given away for not being enough. The air was warmer in here, perhaps from the dogs panting as they continued to race. I opened my mind to the possibilities. I saw the past of the circle, the creator, and what had been done to create the bubble. I would deal with the bastard demon just as soon as I stopped the dogs from running themselves to death.

“Bring me peace, bring me light, bring me the key, bring me the fight. Make this stop, take it away, make with the chop-chop, before I go cray-cray.” Fully aware that I’d started out strong and then fell into bordering on stupid, I still sent the chant out three times to mirror the three that rang with the dogs. A pop split the air, and nearly my eardrums. But when I looked down, I found myself with a dog on each leg, their heads drooped onto my thighs and their eyes searching mine like I’d just served them the best steak ever.

Good enough. I petted them and wondered why no one was coming over to see if they were okay.

When I glanced up, I knew right away why. All three of the others were lying on the ground as if they were rag dolls a child had had a tantrum with.
